Open vs. Closed

Methods of treatment for the spinal disc herniation:

The Traditional, Invasive Method (Open Surgery) :

This method is the old and main method of operation for disc herniation in which the surgeon attempts to correct the herniated disc, after making a incision in the skin and muscular layers, resecting some part of the vertebra and moving aside the spinal canal.

Important Notes on the Open Surgery:
  • Average duration of the operation: 2 to 4 hours
  • Duration of stay in the hospital: at least 2 days
  • Recovery time: at least a month and a half
  • Requires full anesthesia and may be followed by additional symptoms

New Modern LASER Surgery :

This method is Minimally Invasive and Closed Procedure.

What are the benefits of the spinal disc surgery with laser (PLDD) ?

  • The surgery is completed without application of General Anesthesia, and will perform under Local Anesthesia in 20-30 minutes.
  • It has a high accuracy.
  • The results are considerably successful. According to a research on 12539 patients in United States, the rate of success is more than 80%.
  • Nowadays, in many developed countries, this method is employed for the spinal disc treatment.
  • Unlike other methods such as Discogel and Ozone which are forbidden in the United States, this method is approved by FDA.
  • There is a significant decrease in the post-operation symptoms.
  • Usually the post-operation symptoms are reduced in short period of the time.
  • Since this method only uses a fine needle, there will be no wound on the skin.
  • Since using this method does not induce any damage to the muscles of the back or waist and no bone is resected, therefore, the surgery will not lead to the instability of the vertebrae and hence the patience will not experience any additional problem after the surgery.
  • This method does not induce any post-operation adhesions or stenosis around the spinal canal and spinal cord. (vs Open surgery)
  • No damage to the spinal nerves that is typically common in the open surgery will occur.
  • Does not require to take long time rest after surgery and patient can go back to work in a short time. (2-3 days after Laser surgery)
  • The possibility of infection is very very low.
  • The patient will not suffer from the side effects of general anesthesia.
  • The patient is able to spend his recovery time at the comfort of home with their family, instead of staying at the hospital. Therefore it is more cost-effective and economical for the patients.
